Day
3
(September 15, 2020) Verona
Before
We'll leave Malcesine as soon as possible after
probably visiting something we missed the previous day.
Next destination will be Verona's Old Town, where we plan to
leave the car in a parking nearby, just before the ZTL, and walk
through the streets passing by our highlights list.
Most likely we'll get our lunch in Verona and, after finishing
our visits there, we will drive to Padua, where we'll spend the night.
The spots marked at map are:
0- Parking Arena
1- Verona's Arena
2- Julieta's House
3- Piazza delle Erbe
4- Piazza del Duomo
5- Ponte Pietra
6- Cable car to San Pietro's Castle

After
As we planned yesterday, we leave the hotel after
breakfast and checking out at 9:10 AM to go to the terminal of
Mount Baldo's cable car. Yesterday we purchased the tickets with the
help of the staff of the hotel for 9:30 AM. We reach the terminal in 5
minutes and we join the few people that is here waiting. We get soon
to the cable car after the first temperature control of this travel.
It takes just a few minutes for the cable car to
reach
half the way, The views of Malcesine were getting better as we were
getting higher since, slowly, we could see the castle, the entire town,
the lake and the mountains around. We must change to another cable
car in this stop at half of the way because it's a two stages lift. There are lot of people that seems
to plan to spend the entire day up there, with backpacks, bikes and
even dogs.
We've come for the views and we find them after walking a bit up from
the terminal. We don't need more than this, but we feel like could
be here looking such a wonderful view the entire day.
Even with that, we stick to our plan and take the next
cable car back to Malcesine, at 10:15 AM. They leave from the top
every 30 minutes, every quarter past and quarter to an hour. As I
expected, we are alone in the cable car and can fully enjoy the trip.
When leaving the terminal, walking back to the
hotel, the
lines of people waiting for the cable car are huge and go down the
street. Those people at the end are going to wait for hours! Once back
to the hotel we take our luggage, say good bye and take the road. There
is a pleasure on going in a different direction than the
rest,
like with the lines in the cable car, but now we've got the same on the
road, since the line of cars waiting to get Malcesine is several
kilometres long while we are alone in our side of the road.
We reach Verona around 1 PM. After leaving the car at Arena Parking, as
planned, we start our visit to the Old Town by going through a
beautiful gate with a clock, which is the access to the walled area.
Soon after that we have the Arena in front of us,
which is
how they call this sort of Coliseum they've got here, like the one in
Rome, but smaller. From outside it is two floors of arcs all around. We
didn't visit the interior, though, but we know it is maintained so good
that it is usually used to perform operas.
We go on our way to Juliet's House, where we only access to the garden
to see the popular balcony. From there we go to Erbe Square,
the
most monumental square in this Old Town where there is a market set, full of stands.
The clock tower of Reggione Palace is so high that
there is
no way of taking a picture of ourselves with it. We choose to take our
lunch in a restaurant in this square with a sign saying it's 10€ the
menu: two lasagnes with water and coke by 20€ in total.
Then we take our way to the Cathedral, where we have
to pay
3€ for admission. Inside, it is split in three places: the cathedral,
the baptistery and an archaeological site where we could see Roman
mosaics and column bases under the floor.
From there we walk directly to the Stone Bridge,
with
amazing views to Arno River and, once in the other side, we follow the
signs to the cable car to San Pietro's Castle, which is pretty close.
We pay 2€ each for the return trip up to the castle. It is a short ride.
Views to Verona's Old Town during the way up are
already
good. From the castle itself, you cannot get a panoramic view as one
would wish because of the high trees all around.
The partial views, though, are spectacular. In our
way
back down we have to go to the parking as the final stage of this
visit, but the heat and the lack of shadow makes this walk harder than
expected.
We pay 14€ for the parking and leave Verona to go
to
Padua. We reach our hotel, just in front of the Basilica of Saint
Anthony in
around one hour, some minutes past 6 PM. That last walk in Verona to
the parking, with all that heat, has made us want to rest in the room
now.
When we leave the hotel to look for a place for dinner it is
already
dark. We pay 25€ for a dish of meat for me and fish for Eva and end our
day with this.
