Day 7 (August 30, 2021)   Amalfi Coast

Before

Amalfi Coast

We will spend the last day of our trip exploring the towns of the Amalfi Coast, mainly the one that gives this area its name, Amalfi, and Positano. If there is enough time we could reach Maiore and Minore as well.

We have in mind to go by bus and come back by boat or viceversa, but the final decision will be made there according to the schedules.

The spots marked at map are:

1- Positano
2- Amalfi
3- Maiore and Minore

After

When we leave after having our breakfast we walk to San Agnello train station because the Town Hall is just there and is in front of it where the stop for the public bus to Amalfi coast is.

We arrive at 10:15 AM and we can see in the timetable the next bus is at 10:32AM, so we have time to seat for a coffee across the road while waiting. But, just after ordering, the bus appears abd we run to it only to be told that we cannot buy the ticket on board, that we should have bought it in advance. So it leaves without us.

Since next bus is at 12:32PM we get our coffee that we ordered before and go up to the station to take the next train to Sorrento and get the bus we got information about yesterday just there. It's getting late and I assume it will be no visit to Maiore or Minore.
Bus stop by Sorrento train station
At 11AM we are waiting at the SITAsud bus stop by the Sorrento train station with the 2.40€ tickets we've bough at the tourist office but, besides being alone, I can see quite movement happening by the red buses parked in the road across, so I go to there to check and find out that there it is the bus to Amalfi and is quite full. We get on the bus immediately. The timetable of this bus can be found here.

The bus leaves at 11:30AM and goes by usual wide roads by about one hour but, once it reaches the Southern Coast it starts the slow drive by the narrow road carved from the wall of the cliffs of this coast.

Soon we realize that we are going through Positano because of the colorful houses, but we have to wait to go across the town to be able to get off the bus. The views of the town from there are just wonderful.

It's because of this view from here that we can discard going down to the beach, but we walk down looking for other views.

We explore the town around this area and make some shopping before going back up to the bus stop to wait for the next bus. We've bought our tickets by 2€ each before at the shop that we've been pointed. We wait for about 40 minutes until it appears and, when get on, we already know that the first thing we'll do in Amalfi will be take our lunch.

The ticket boxes for the ferries are here too so we bay two tickets for the Amalfi-Sorrento ferry by 16.50€ each. Boarding time is 5PM, so we have nearly two hours to explore Amalfi.

In one minute we reach Piazza Duomo (Cathedral Square), which is Amalfi's highlight and, in general, today's highlight. First we see Saint Andrew's fountain and the beautiful cathedral stands out in the background, above a wide staircase.

The stairs up lead to the end stage of this itinerary, which is the cathedral itself, with similar designs that the one in the crypt. This way, the route is keeping the best for the end.
