Day 4 (August 27, 2021)   Capri

Before

Map of Capri

We have the ferry to Capri at 10:35 AM this day, so we should be reaching the island by 11:20 AM. Once there, we would leave the luggage in the port and we'll join one of the boat tours around the island that stops at Grotta Azzurra.

After the tour we'll have our lunch and we would explore Capri until the time of our ferry to Sorrento at 5:40 PM. Our only task in Sorrento is to go to our hotel/convent in Sant'Agnello.

The spots marked at map are:

1- Capri Port
2- Capri Town
3- Augustus Gardens
4- I Faraglioni

After

Yesterday, we brought something from the supermarket for today's breakfast and ordered a taxi for today at 9:30 AM, which arrives on time. We pay 15€ for the ride and we join a line in front of the NLG sign, which is the company of our ferry, but the line was finally for another one.
Beverello Port
We have to wait for the boat to come, what it does some minutes before the departing time: 10:35 AM. We board on it and have a peaceful trip that takes less than one hour and leaves us in Capri Port at 11:30 AM.
Leaving Naples Port
Reaching Capri
Capri Island
In the same passway that leads to the town we find the tourist office, where I ask about where to leave our luggage and we are pointed to a store where we pay 8€ for our two small bags, the backpack and a purse.
Tourist Office at Capri Port
From there, we go to the first ticket box we see offering the navegation tour around the island and pay 18€ each and board on a small boat just there. Wedon't have to wait a lot before departing. When buying the ticket we've been already told that the Grotta Azzurra is closed today.
Itinerary of the tour around Capri
The route aroud the island is anti-clockwise, so the best side to enjoy the landscape is the left (starboard), but we are in the right (port).
Marina Grande
Once we leave the port behind the island turns more vertical. We soon reach the Grotta Azzurra, where we can see that it is indeed closed for everybody and the reason is obvious: sea level is too high and only the top of the entrance is over the surface, so the grute could only be accessend from underwater.
Grotta AzzurraGrotta Azzurra's flooded entrance
We keep sailing around the island finding out caverns in the walls and some fortresses every when and then.
Mesola Fort
The next highlight is the top one of this tour: Il Faraglioni. These are two big rocks raising from the sea, close to eah other and with a natural arch in one of them.

They are located in front of Marina Piccola, which is a sort of private port in the opposite side of Capri port Marina Grande.

Just after that, we're getting into the Grotta del Coral, where we can see a part with the same effect in the water as Grotta Azzurra, with light coming from underwater and seems to stands out the blue of the sea.

Punta Carena Lighthouse  The tour has taken one hour and a half and we are left in the same spot we boarded at Marina Grande. Since it's over 1:30 PM we choose a place to eat among the wide offer of restaurants in front of the sea.
Capri Port
We choose restaurant Augusto because of the variety in their menu and we order octopuss and salmon sushi and a starter to share and spaguetti with clams for me and penne all'arrabiata for Eva. With wine and desserts, we pay 80€ in total.

It's around 3:30 PM when we are ready to go up to Capri Town. For this we pay 2€ each for the funicular ticket that leaves us up there in a few more than 5 minutes. Before that, we went to SNAV ticket box to get the tickets for the ferry to Sorrento.
Capri's funicularCapri's funicular
The first we see after going out from the funicular station is a terrace to the sea. We enjoy the views before getting into the town. The station is in the center of Capri Town.
View of Capri
We leave the square behind and walk thrugh the crowded streets of Capri Town towards the only visit we want to do. We reach the other side of the island soon where we follow the signs to “Giardini di Augusto”.
Augustus gardens
In the entrance to the gardens we need to pay 1€ for the admission, but the problem is they don't sell it. It can only be purchased online, so I'm forced to buy it using the browser in my cell phone.
View of Faraglioni from Augustus gardens
The views, as it's getting usual in this island, are amazing. We can see the Faraglioni at one side and, in the other side, a beatiful old path (Via Kropp) snaeking down to the sea.

After this visit we have 45 minutes until the time we are going to take the funicular back to the port, so we walk around and make some shopping before coming back to the square. We take coffee and ice cream in the square until it is the time.

Soon after 5 PM we start our way back going to the funicular station nearby, where we take our place in the stairs because the line goes up to there. The funicular leaves us in the port 25 minutes before the departure time of the ferry.
Trip down to Capri Port by funicular
We take our baggage back and we see a ferry of SNAV arriving at the port that we assume is the one we need to board. However we realize there is another SNAV ferry at the other side of the port, a bigger one, so I go there to ask and it results to be finally the one to Sorrento.

We take our seat for the short sail of 40 minutes until we are arriving at Sorrento, which verticality of the coast surprise us.

Leaving Capri
Sorrento Port
That verticality is even more impressive in the short distance, once in Sorrento Port. When we get the place of the taxis there is no one left and we have to wait until one comes.

We pay 30€ for the ride to Domus San vicenzo, the convent that will be our lodging, and we meet the nun that deals with the customers, because is the one that talk well in English, to checking in. Once in our room we get an unexpected and wonderful surprise at the other side of the window.

We still have enough food for a dinner in our room, so we rest knowing that tomorrow is the most demanding day of this travel.
