Day 8 (October 27, 2019)   Puerto Piramides

Before

Flight Ushuaia - Trelew

Our flight from Ushuaia to Trelew takes off at 10:50 AM and is scheduled to land at 1 PM.

Once in Trelew we’ll pick up our rented car, which we’ll deliver the next day. We’ll drive around 150 Km from the airport to Puerto Piramides, in Peninsula Valdes, which will take around one hour and a half.

We may do some stops in our way in El Doradillo beach and Interpretation Center Istmo Ameghino.

Our plan in Puerto Piramides is a walk around the area and, probably, going to Puerto Pardelas for a chance to whale watching from the look out and enjoying the best sunset in the area.

After

We have time this morning for packaging and having our breakfast with no rushes. We ask for a taxi to the airport and it is at the door in 5 minutes. We pay 280$ for the ride. Our flight takes off as scheduled and arrives at Trelew at 1 PM. Before leaving the airport one can see this is a dinosaur area.
Interior of Trelew's airport
All goes fast at Trelew airport, even picking up our rented car. We leave it in the parking because we already had the thought of having our lunch at the airport since it doesn’t seem there are lots of options on the road to Puerto Piramides. We’re limited in the time we have for it, though, since today is elections day in Argentina and they’ll close at 2:30 PM to go to vote.

We get one Milanese each and share a salad by 1450$ and leave the place just when they’re closing.
Driving by Peninsula Valdes
We finally leave the airport and drive on the longest straight roads that goes through this flat landscape. We can see a rhea, some other birds and multiple guanacos in the way before reaching the gate to the Natural Reserve, where we pay 850$ per person and 120$ for the car.
Gate to Protected Area Peninsula Valdes
Next stop is at Visitors Center, where we’re alone. We comment to the staff our plans for today and tomorrow and they tell us road to Punta Pardelas is closed to traffic and there is no fauna at Punta Norte. We’ll use this information to amend our plans. We can see the whale skeleton and killer whale skull that are exposed here.

The idea now is driving directly to the hotel from here, but we’re still stopping one more time in a lookout to Puerto Piramides and its beach.
Lookout to Puerto Piramides
Once we’ve got room we walk by the beach to the other side of the town, where the agencies for whale watching are concentrated to get our tickets from the booking made by our hotel. Somehow, we find most of these agencies are closed already, and that includes the one we needed. It seems they close at 5 PM.

We walk back to the hotel by the main street to check our options for getting some food for dinner. We get some meat patties for today and sweet pastries for tomorrow’s breakfast.

We get our room when the sun is gone and it’s getting chilly. We had a warm day so far here. We’ve already checked there is nothing opened after 8PM here.
