Day
1 (October 20, 2019) Buenos Aires
Before
Arrival at Buenos Aires is scheduled for 8:20 AM
and, once
reached the hotel, there is no ambitious plan for this day because, as
usual, we need to allow room for the rest we may need after such long
flight and jet lag.
But, since the hotel most likely won’t deliver the room this early,
we’ll need to spend some time in the city with some of the visits of
our list. If possible, we would go to the furthest areas, mainly
Republica and Plaza Dorrego.
The spots marked at map are:
0- Hotel UpRecoleta
1- La Recoleta Cemetery
2- El Ateneo bookstore
3- Casa Rosada
4- Women's Bridge
5- Obelisco
6- Plaza Dorrego
7- Mafalda statue
8- Boca neighborhood (Caminito alley and Bombonera)

After
No issues in our flights to Buenos Aires with a
link in London. The 14 hours flight from the British capital city feels
shorter than expected after sleeping 7 hours straight.
The exit from Ezeiza airport is fast and we’re in the desk
for the official taxis quickly. We pay 1700$ (We’ll use the dollar sign
for pesos in the same way it’s done in Argentina) and, after a ride of
a bit more than one hour, we reach Hotel Up Recoleta at 10:30 AM, where
we’re given a room on despite of being this early.
We rest a bit and stop a taxi to go to Theater
Colon (140$) to pick up our tickets for this evening. We walk to the
obelisk, which is just besides.
We keep walking to Plaza the Mayo (May Square)
following our planned itinerary. It’s a bit chilly, but nice. We do
some shopping in the way shocked by the low prices: a cup of mate with
“bombilla” by 150$ (around 2€).
The first place in Plaza de Mayo we get in is the
cathedral. It’s big and, inside, San Martin's mausoleum is always
guarded
by two soldiers which keep being totally still.
Once in the square we go to the front of Casa
Rosada (Pink house), where we can see the change of the guards, which
seems to be for the mausoleum we could see before.
We follow our way to Plaza Dorrego passing by
Puerto Madero. Before reaching the square we find the street market
that we knew was going on here on Sundays.
It’s like a handicraft festival for which we’re walking
through until reaching the restaurant we chose for today: Todo Mundo.
We’re four and get two milanesas, steak, calamari starter, and salad by
nearly 3000$.
When we’re done with the lunch we walk up Defensa
street to the Paseo de la Historieta (comic walk) looking for the
popular photo with Mafalda. In our way we realize how huge is this
market and the amount of people it brings here. Our photo with Mafalda
is finally just a photo of Mafalda because the line for it is extremely
long.
We cannot wait that long as we need to get ready for the
theater, so we take a side street to take a taxi. In our way we have
the chance of enjoy some tango dancing and meet another character from
this Paseo de la Historieta but, as it is not that popular, there is no
one making photos.
We pay 250$ for the taxi back to the hotel. Once
there we get ready and leave quite quick, since it’s already past 4 PM
and the ballet starts at 5 PM. We pay 140$ for the taxi to the theater
and get our seats just 5 minutes before the curtain opens.
After two hours and a half we’re back out in the
street looking for a taxi. It’s already dark and we can enjoy the view
of the obelisk. The taxi back to the hotel is 350$ this time due to the
time and the traffic jam. We’re not going to go out more today. The
tiredness
and jet lag make we’re already sleeping by 10 PM.
